I NEED MY PROFESSOR TO CALL ME BY MY PREFERRED NAME AND PRONOUNS…
The Pride Resource Center has assisted many students in writing letters to professors and informing them of preferred names and pronouns. Please refer to student-written letter for a sample that one can send to their professor. If you have questions or would like the assistance of the Pride Resource Center, please contact us:
The letter written below was written by a student who identified as transmasculine.
Dear [insert appropriate title and professor’s name — e.g., Dr. Salazar]
I am a student in your [insert class name]. The purpose of this email is to inform you of something I would like you to know about me before spring semester begins. I am getting in contact with you to let you know that I identify as transgender. To me, being transgender means I am female bodied, but I self-identify as male.
My name will probably show up on your roster as [birth name], but I would prefer to go by [preferred name here] and to be referred to with [preferred] pronouns. I would appreciate it if you called me [preferred name] in class. If you have any questions for me regarding this, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Also, if you have any further questions feel free to contact Aaric Guerriero, the director of the Pride Resource Center.
Thank you very much for your understanding,
